Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 9 February 2026

Posted: 9th February 2026

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents & Carers

Last week was a vibrant and joyful one in the Junior School, filled with curiosity, creativity and real-world learning as the girls immersed themselves in Maths Week. The focus on money and financial understanding brought classrooms to life, with the girls exploring spending, saving, budgeting and calculating change through practical, hands-on activities. It was a pleasure to see the girls approach these challenges with such enthusiasm and growing confidence, applying their mathematical thinking to everyday situations while developing valuable life skills that will support them beyond the classroom.

That same spirit of curiosity and imagination shone beautifully during Year 3’s assembly this morning, where the girls retold the story: The Ancient Egypt Sleepover, by Stephen Davies. With confidence and wonderful stage presence, they brought to life the tale of Mo and his unforgettable overnight adventure at the British Museum. The girls skilfully captured both the excitement of exploring ancient treasures and the suspense of protecting them from a mysterious thief. Their teamwork, expressive storytelling and evident enjoyment made it a truly memorable performance and a wonderful reflection of how deeply they had engaged with their learning.

Watching the assembly stirred some very special memories for me. As a child, my grandmother took my brother, cousin and me to Cairo and it remains one of the most extraordinary adventures of my childhood. I still vividly remember seeing the pyramids slowly rising from the desert sands and feeling completely awestruck by their scale and history. Visiting the Egyptian Museum and seeing Tutankhamun’s artefacts left a lasting impression and sparked my lifelong fascination with history and storytelling. Even now, I can remember the sense of wonder I felt walking through those galleries and imagining the lives, traditions and stories behind each artefact. It is incredibly special to see that same sense of wonder beginning to flourish in the girls as they explore ancient civilisations and the stories that help us understand the world and our place within it.

At the Junior School, we are passionate about nurturing curious, confident and compassionate learners. Opportunities such as Maths Week and curriculum experiences like Year 3’s exploration of Ancient Egypt encourage the girls to think deeply, ask thoughtful questions and develop the confidence to share their ideas and perspectives with others, gently reflecting the qualities we celebrate through our Channing Characters.

Across the school this half term, I have been immensely proud of the many ways the girls continue to demonstrate kindness, determination and growing independence in their learning and friendships. Staff regularly share wonderful examples of the girls supporting one another, embracing new challenges and taking increasing ownership of their learning journeys. These everyday moments truly capture the warmth and spirit of our school community and reflect the strong partnership we value so highly between home and school.

This week, we also say a fond farewell to Mr Brimsley, our much-loved Assistant Chef, as he retires and begins an exciting new chapter in Jamaica. Over the past seven years, he has played a special role in school life, in helping to prepare delicious meals enjoyed by the girls and staff each day and always doing so with great care and pride. We thank him sincerely for his dedication and commitment to our community and wish him every happiness in his well-deserved retirement.

As we look ahead, I would like to extend warm wishes to families marking important cultural and religious occasions over the coming weeks. We wish those celebrating Shrove Tuesday a very happy day and extend our warmest thoughts to those observing Ash Wednesday. We also send our very best wishes to families celebrating Lunar New Year and hope the year ahead brings happiness, prosperity and good health. In addition, we extend our warmest wishes to families preparing for Ramadan and wish you a peaceful and reflective time.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support, encouragement and partnership. It makes such a difference and helps us create the joyful, nurturing environment in which every girl in the Junior School can flourish.

I hope you all have a restful and happy half term. As always, the school will feel a little quieter without the girls’ energy, laughter and curiosity filling our corridors. We very much look forward to welcoming them back refreshed and ready for the next stage of their learning adventures. Like the explorers and storytellers who once uncovered the treasures of Ancient Egypt, the girls continue to discover new ideas, ask bold questions and uncover the wonders of learning, and it is a privilege to watch those journeys unfold each day.

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

NSPCC’s Speak Out Stay Safe Programme: Tuesday 24 & Thursday 26 February

We will be participating in the NSPCC’s Speak out. Stay safe. Programme after half term. Speak out. Stay safe. is a programme for children aged 5-11 which aims to help them understand abuse in all its forms, at an age-appropriate level, and to recognise the signs of abuse. Children are taught to speak out if they are worried, either to a safe adult or Childline.

This child-friendly programme is aligned with our PSHE curriculum and consists of age-appropriate virtual assemblies and supporting classroom based activities which we have reviewed, alongside NSPCC volunteer-led face to face workshops for children aged 6-7 and 9-11. The content is delivered in an engaging and interactive way with the help of the NSPCC mascot, Buddy. Please see the schedule below:

  • Tuesday 24 February: Online assembly during Form Time for all year groups.
  • Thursday 26 February: In-person workshops for Years 2, 5 and 6.

Parents and carers are asked to let their daughter’s Form Teacher know if their daughter may have experienced anything (in the past or happening now) which may mean they need extra support before, during or after taking part in this programme.

If you would like to know more about the Speak out. Stay safe. programme visit www.nspcc.org.uk/speakout.

Woodwind & Brass Training Project for Year 1 & Year 2 ~ complete form by Friday 27 February

Starting in the Summer Term, we are excited to offer the girls a chance to continue their musical journey through our Woodwind and Brass Training Project.

This opportunity is open to girls who are not already in the Year 1 and Year 2 Strings Programme. They will continue learning on their training instrument (either pBuzz or Nuvo recorder) before moving on to their chosen orchestral woodwind or brass instrument in Year 3.

Lessons will:

  • Take place at break times or lunch times, just like the small-group strings lessons
  • Be taught in pairs or groups of three
  • Be led by a specialist woodwind or brass teacher for the child’s chosen instrument

The aim of the programme is to help the girls develop strong, transferable musical skills (such as posture, breath control, note reading, rhythm and ensemble playing). These skills will support them when they begin 1:1 lessons on their orchestral instrument in Year 3.

If you would like your daughter to take part, please complete the form by Friday 27 February. Unfortunately, late applications cannot be processed.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with Mrs Munro (Head of Music).

World Book Day: Thursday 5 March

There is the opportunity to purchase one of her beautiful books from Pickled Pepper Books here, which will be signed and dedicated to your daughter on the day. On Friday 6 March, we are so excited to welcome Sophie Cleverly, author of the popular Scarlet and Ivy and Violet Veil series, for a presentation and book signing with Key Stage 2. If your daughter would like to receive a signed copy, please order here. To ensure that your book arrives in time for the event, please order by 10.00am, Monday 16 February.

We are excited to invite all parents to our Open Classroom Event on Tuesday 24 March, from 4-5pm. This event offers parents the opportunity to visit their daughter’s classroom and explore the work that she has produced in her books.

This is an informal event designed to celebrate your daughter’s progress. Parents will be able to browse through books and projects, with their daughters guiding them through their work and sharing what they have learnt. This is a fantastic chance to engage with your daughter’s education and see firsthand how she has grown academically.

Additionally on this date, Miss Hamalis will be hosting a Parents’ Tea Party with Mrs Brant (Deputy Head) and Mr Davies (Deputy Head Academic): a relaxed opportunity to spend time together and get to know one another better. LDCA Cheer Camp: February Half Term

Mindful Driving & Parking

Information

Unfortunately we have had several complaints recently, in particular about parents parking at the junction of Cholmeley Park and Highgate Hill, as well as on the zigzag lines outside the school. This creates a real risk to parents and pupils, as well as members of the general public. Please be mindful of our neighbours, the local community and other members of the Channing community when you drive and park during morning drop off and afternoon collection by driving sensibly and parking legally. In order to help alleviate traffic and parking issues in the village, we offer Early Birds from 7.30am and have staggered collection times.

It is fantastic to see many of you organising ‘park and stride’ (parking a few roads down and walking), as well as arranging car shares if you live close to other Channing families.
