Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 24 February 2025

Posted: 24th February 2025

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents

At the Junior School, we are committed to nurturing not only academic excellence but also the character and mindset that will serve the girls throughout their lives. One of the most valuable traits we can instil in them is perseverance – the ability to keep going despite challenges, setbacks or difficulties.

As part of our bespoke Character Education Programme, the much-loved Perseverance Squirrel is a familiar figure who reminds the girls that success isn’t about getting things right the first time, but about embracing challenges, learning from mistakes and persisting even when things feel tough. Through classroom discussions, assemblies and daily learning experiences, we inspire the girls to develop a ‘can-do’ attitude, approach setbacks with confidence and recognise that effort is the key to mastery.

Teaching perseverance is so important because it helps the girls to:

  • Develop confidence in their own abilities.
  • Approach new experiences with curiosity rather than fear (just like Curiosity Fox).
  • Manage frustration and setbacks in a healthy and constructive way.
  • Build the stamina and determination necessary for long-term success and fulfilment.

In our assembly this morning, we explored the journeys of some well-known figures who have demonstrated remarkable perseverance:

  • Lionel Messi – Diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency as a child, Messi overcame financial and physical challenges to become one of the greatest footballers in history. His dedication, resilience and unwavering commitment to his craft exemplify the power of perseverance.
  • J.K. Rowling – Before achieving worldwide success with ‘Harry Potter’, Rowling faced multiple rejections from publishers and personal hardships. However, her determination and belief in her story led her to become one of the most successful authors of all time.
  • Michael Jordan – Cut from his high school basketball team, Jordan used this setback as motivation to work harder. His perseverance and relentless drive helped him become an icon in the sport, proving that failure is just a stepping stone to success.
  • Emily Blunt – As a child, Blunt struggled with a debilitating stammer that made speaking difficult. Through perseverance and practice, she overcame this challenge and went on to become an award-winning actress, demonstrating that obstacles can be overcome with resilience and effort.
  • Walt Disney – Before creating the global entertainment empire that bears his name, Disney faced numerous failures, including being fired from a newspaper for “lacking creativity” and experiencing multiple business setbacks. His perseverance, vision and persistent pursuit of his dreams ultimately led to the creation of some of the most beloved films and theme parks in history, inspiring generations worldwide.

Developing perseverance is a journey that extends beyond the school gates and your support at home makes a tremendous difference. By working together, we can help your daughters build the confidence and determination to tackle challenges with a positive mindset. Here are some simple yet powerful ways you can encourage perseverance at home:

  • Praise effort, not just achievement – Celebrate the hard work your daughter puts in, even if she doesn’t succeed immediately.
  • Model perseverance – Share your own experiences of facing challenges and persevering to overcome them.
  • Encourage problem-solving – Instead of stepping in right away, ask questions that help her think through difficulties and find her own solutions.
  • Reframe failure as a learning opportunity – Help her see mistakes as stepping stones to improvement rather than reasons to give up.

We are delighted that our commitment to fostering resilience, confidence and a love of learning has been recognised in the latest Good Schools Guide review, which is now live on our website. Both the Junior and Senior School received glowing praise, with particular emphasis on our strong sense of community, inclusivity and pastoral care. We were thrilled to see the reviewer highlight that: “ ‘Fearless’ teaching and learning, encouraging girls to step out of their comfort zone and be ‘10 percent braver,’ is reaping academic rewards.” These independent and comprehensive reviews truly affirm our mission to empower girls to become kind, confident and articulate young women who are ready for life’s challenges. As one parent beautifully shared in the review: “We couldn’t have given them a better start” (thank you, whoever you are!).

You can read both reviews in full here: Good Schools Guide ~ Channing School

Finally, Ramadan Mubarak to all our families observing this sacred month. Wishing you a celebration filled with blessings and joy alongside your loved ones.

And to everyone marking St David’s Day, Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus (Happy St David’s Day)!

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

Birds & Owls: Reminder & Launch Event

Booking Reminder

Our Early Birds and Late Owls provisions are now supervised by Let’s Leap, who also oversee the booking process. Please book sessions through the ‘Magic Booking’ online system, accessible via the Let’s Leap website. This system allows you to book sessions up to 3.00pm on the same day and offers easy options for adjusting or cancelling bookings.

Please note that while Early Birds remains free of charge during the Spring 2 half term, it is still necessary to sign your daughter up for each day she wishes to attend. All pupils will need to be signed up in advance to attend.

Let’s Leap encourages all parents to register their daughter’s details on the Let’s Leap system, even if you do not normally make use of wraparound care, just in case your daughter needs to attend a session at the last minute. When registering your daughter’s details on the Magic Booking system, there will be options to add any relevant information about allergies or additional needs. This ensures that all necessary care and support can be provided during wraparound care.

You can easily amend or cancel bookings via the ‘Magic Booking’ system up to 12.00pm on the same day. If you need any assistance, you can call Let’s Leap’s friendly Customer Service Team on 020 3797 6386 or email them at milo@letsleap.co.uk. Please note, you are no longer able to sign up for Early Birds or Late Owls by contacting Miss Radford and Miss Bodell in the office.

In addition, pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, with a Channing sibling in KS2, are eligible to attend our new, free Sister Stop provision in the Library. Sister Stop will run from your daughter’s dismissal time until 3.35pm. Reception and Key Stage 1 siblings need to be collected from Sister Stop by the end-time of 3.35pm. If you require your daughter(s) to be at school after this time, you will need to sign them up to session one of Late Owls instead. Pupils in Reception – Year 2, who do not have a KS2 sibling, will not be able to attend this provision. Please contact Miss Kitsis or Mrs Brant if you have any questions.

Launch Event

To help introduce the new provision, Let’s Leap warmly invites you to a Birds and Owls launch event at the Junior School on Monday 3 March from 8.30am to 9.30am. This will be an opportunity to learn more about the provision, ask any questions you may have and see what’s in store. Milo, Let’s Leap’s mascot, will also be at the gate at 8.00am to welcome everyone. If you’d like to attend, please register your interest by completing this Google Form by Wednesday 26 February.

Chatting with Channing

Year 12 Historians Chat with Professor Tracy Borman

Listen on: Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Channing Website

The latest episode welcomes a distinguished guest, Professor Tracy Borman, a leading historian, author and Chief Executive of the Heritage Education Trust. Interviewed by Year 12 history students Ariella and Opal, Professor Borman takes listeners on a fascinating journey through her career, sharing how her love for history was first sparked by her A-level teacher, Mrs Jones. From classroom inspiration to overseeing some of Britain’s most historic sites, including the Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace, her story highlights the power of passionate teaching and perseverance.

A key focus of the discussion is the role of women in history, particularly those who shaped the life and reign of Elizabeth I. Professor Borman reflects on figures such as Blanche Parry, Elizabeth’s devoted nurse and Lettice Knollys, a rival at court, emphasising how these lesser-known women played pivotal roles behind the scenes. She also encourages young historians to explore figures beyond the well-documented kings and queens to gain a fuller understanding of the past.

With insights on Tudor intrigue, advice for aspiring historians and reflections on why history remains crucial in today’s world, this episode is a must-listen for anyone passionate about the past. Tune in now to Chatting with Channing to hear Professor Borman’s inspiring and thought-provoking conversation.
