In the latest episode of Chatting with Channing, we hear from Ms Nelson, Director of Sport at Channing School, whose passion for physical education and inclusivity is helping shape a vibrant and supportive sporting culture for all pupils.

With a background in competitive netball, Ms Nelson now leads a department that offers far more than just traditional school sport. From football and cricket to trampolining, dance, and cross-country, the PE curriculum and extracurricular programme are designed to give every student the chance to find something they love.

Inclusivity is a cornerstone of Ms Nelson’s approach. Whether a pupil is representing the school at national competitions or trying a sport for the first time, the department works to ensure everyone feels supported and valued.

Throughout the conversation, Ms Nelson reflects on how physical activity contributes to more than just fitness—it also builds confidence, emotional resilience, and teamwork. “Success doesn’t always mean winning,” she explains. “It can mean trying something new, supporting a teammate, or using PE as a space to reset and reflect.”

Looking ahead, the future is bright for sport at Channing. Ms Nelson outlines exciting plans to expand opportunities further—introducing initiatives like self-defence classes, enhancing local school partnerships, and exploring more workshops focused on wellbeing and female athlete health.

At its heart, the department’s mission is clear: to help every pupil leave Channing with a lifelong love of movement, whatever their ability or background.
