In the latest episode of Chatting with Channing, we speak with Anna and Molly, two sixth-formers at Channing, about their experiences auditioning for and preparing to perform in the upcoming musical Hadestown. They share insights into their backgrounds, the audition process, and the challenge of balancing schoolwork with rehearsals. The duo reflects on their growth in confidence and teamwork, as well as the supportive environment fostered by the drama department. They also highlight the importance of feedback and collaboration in the creative process, encouraging younger students to get involved in drama and make the most of the opportunities available to them. As they look back on favourite productions and share their hopes for the future, both students express excitement for the upcoming performance of Hadestown.

Hadestown is a Tony Award–winning musical that reimagines the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Set in a gritty, jazz-infused underworld inspired by New Orleans and Depression-era America, the story follows Orpheus, a hopeful young musician, as he journeys to rescue his beloved Eurydice from an industrialised, corporate underworld ruled by Hades. Blending folk, blues, and soulful musical storytelling, the show explores themes of love, trust, ambition, and the power of community. It is ultimately a tale of hope in the face of adversity, reminding audiences that even in the darkest moments, belief and creativity can change the world. Anna plays the role of Hades, while Molly takes on the role of Hermes.

With the musical being entirely sung-through, Anna and Molly discuss the challenge of mastering timing, vocals, and characterisation while staying on top of A Levels. They credit the Channing drama department for fostering an encouraging environment where feedback is valued and students are supported to push their abilities. Collaboration, they stress, is key — and they speak passionately about the importance of taking risks, learning from others, and enjoying the creative journey.

Reflecting on their favourite productions and looking ahead to university, both students share plans to stay connected to drama and express pride in bringing Hadestown to life. Their message to younger students is simple: seize every opportunity, get involved, and enjoy being part of something bigger.

As opening night approaches, Anna and Molly are filled with excitement and gratitude. Their advice to younger pupils remains clear: be brave, take every opportunity, and throw yourself into the creative life of the school. Hadestown promises to be a powerful, moving production — and this conversation is the perfect warm-up.
