Dear Parents & Carers
This morning, Mrs Brant (Deputy Head) led a thoughtful and uplifting assembly to launch Children’s Mental Health Week, ahead of next week when we will be marking the event across the Junior School. She invited the girls to reflect on the importance of belonging, kindness and emotional wellbeing, setting a positive and purposeful tone. Supporting the mental health of our girls is a key priority and we firmly believe that happy, secure children learn best. When the girls feel safe, valued and understood, they are far more able to engage confidently with their learning, take risks, build positive relationships and flourish both academically and personally.
This year’s theme, This is my Place, encourages children to think about where and with whom they feel a sense of connection, whether at school, at home or within their wider community. During the assembly, we sang the song ‘Shelter’, which beautifully explored the idea that we all need spaces and relationships that help us feel supported, grounded and able to cope when things feel challenging. The girls were encouraged to reflect on what helps them feel calm and secure and how they can help others feel the same.
A key message from the assembly was that wellbeing is strengthened through small, everyday actions. The girls were asked to choose at least one simple act to try, such as saying hello to someone they do not usually talk to, sharing resources or inviting someone to join their group. These moments of connection can make a powerful difference to how the girls feel about themselves and their place in the world and they lie at the heart of a positive and inclusive school community.
Throughout Children’s Mental Health Week, the girls will take part in a range of age-appropriate activities designed to promote emotional literacy, resilience and a strong sense of belonging. We hope these experiences will help them develop the language and confidence to talk about their feelings, understand themselves better and show empathy and kindness towards others. If you would like to join in with some of these activities at home with your daughter, please do follow the link.
We will conclude the week with a special non-uniform day on Friday 13 February, themed Dress to Express. This will be a joyful opportunity for the girls to celebrate their individuality by wearing their favourite colours, outfits or creative combinations that reflect who they are. In keeping with our commitment to sustainability, we encourage the girls to use items they already have at home so that creativity can shine without the need for new purchases. We very much look forward to seeing the confidence and self-expression the girls, and staff, bring to the day.
Thank you, as always, for working in partnership with us to support the mental health and wellbeing of our girls. Together, we can help ensure that every girl feels happy, confident and ready to learn.
With warm wishes
Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School
