Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 2 February 2026

Posted: 2nd February 2026

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents & Carers

This morning, Mrs Brant (Deputy Head) led a thoughtful and uplifting assembly to launch Children’s Mental Health Week, ahead of next week when we will be marking the event across the Junior School. She invited the girls to reflect on the importance of belonging, kindness and emotional wellbeing, setting a positive and purposeful tone. Supporting the mental health of our girls is a key priority and we firmly believe that happy, secure children learn best. When the girls feel safe, valued and understood, they are far more able to engage confidently with their learning, take risks, build positive relationships and flourish both academically and personally.

This year’s theme, This is my Place, encourages children to think about where and with whom they feel a sense of connection, whether at school, at home or within their wider community. During the assembly, we sang the song ‘Shelter’, which beautifully explored the idea that we all need spaces and relationships that help us feel supported, grounded and able to cope when things feel challenging. The girls were encouraged to reflect on what helps them feel calm and secure and how they can help others feel the same.

A key message from the assembly was that wellbeing is strengthened through small, everyday actions. The girls were asked to choose at least one simple act to try, such as saying hello to someone they do not usually talk to, sharing resources or inviting someone to join their group. These moments of connection can make a powerful difference to how the girls feel about themselves and their place in the world and they lie at the heart of a positive and inclusive school community.

Throughout Children’s Mental Health Week, the girls will take part in a range of age-appropriate activities designed to promote emotional literacy, resilience and a strong sense of belonging. We hope these experiences will help them develop the language and confidence to talk about their feelings, understand themselves better and show empathy and kindness towards others. If you would like to join in with some of these activities at home with your daughter, please do follow the link.

We will conclude the week with a special non-uniform day on Friday 13 February, themed Dress to Express. This will be a joyful opportunity for the girls to celebrate their individuality by wearing their favourite colours, outfits or creative combinations that reflect who they are. In keeping with our commitment to sustainability, we encourage the girls to use items they already have at home so that creativity can shine without the need for new purchases. We very much look forward to seeing the confidence and self-expression the girls, and staff, bring to the day.

Thank you, as always, for working in partnership with us to support the mental health and wellbeing of our girls. Together, we can help ensure that every girl feels happy, confident and ready to learn.

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

However, they will endeavour to answer your queries within 24 hours. Please do not think that a lack of instant response means a lack of interest on the part of the member of staff.

Please note that staff are not expected to reply to emails outside normal school hours, weekends or during school holidays. If you have an emergency which needs to be dealt with before school next opens, please email: jsoffice@channing.co.uk. Calendar & Events

Maths Week: Monday 2 February - Friday 6 February

This week we are celebrating Maths Week; this year’s theme is ‘Money’. Each form will be taking part in a financial education project that is suitable for their age group, providing the girls with an opportunity to gain skills, knowledge and confidence in money matters. On Friday the girls will celebrate and share their projects as part of NSPCC Number Day.

On Friday 6 February, we are pairing up with the NSPCC for their Number Day. The girls and staff are encouraged to take part in Dress up for Digits, while raising money to support NSPCC services such as the Speak Out Stay Safe programme. If your daughter is unable to bring the suggested £2 donation to school on Friday, please donate online using the link below: Number Day

The girls are invited to come into school dressed as a number; this could be anything from wearing a football shirt with a number on to dressing up as a dice. To help the school in its aim to become more sustainable, we encourage the girls to make an outfit using items they already have. We look forward to seeing their creativity!

Sharpe Food Bank Collection: Monday 26 January - Friday 6 February

This week is the final week for Sharpe House to donate items to the Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation’s (AWTF) food bank. The AWTF aims to support families in need with emergency food parcels, and provides hot meals and fresh fruit and vegetables to over 200 hundred homeless people in the local area.

If your daughter is in Sharpe House, please ask her to place donations in one of the blue, labelled Food Bank collection bins in the courtyard by Friday 6 February. Although the donations will mainly be from Sharpe, all members of the community are, of course, very welcome to donate. Currently, we have very few donations to offer the AWTF, so would very much appreciate any donations that come in this week.

This term, the AWTF Food Bank is desperately in need of the following items:

  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Crisps
  • Toilet paper
  • UHT milk
  • Cereal, especially Weetabix

Please ensure all items are long-life produce, as regrettably, fresh items cannot be donated and that all donated items are within their sell by and use by date.

Many thanks in advance to Sharpe House for all your support!

Open Classroom & Parents’ Tea Party: Save the Date ~ Tuesday 24 March, 4-5pm

We are excited to invite all parents to our Open Classroom Event on Tuesday 24 March, from 4-5pm. This event offers parents the opportunity to visit their daughter’s classroom and explore the work that she has produced in her books.

This is an informal event designed to celebrate your daughter’s progress. Parents will be able to browse through books and projects, with their daughters guiding them through their work and sharing what they have learnt. This is a fantastic chance to engage with your daughter’s education and see firsthand how she has grown academically.

Additionally on this date, Miss Hamalis will be hosting a Parents’ Tea Party with Mrs Brant (Deputy Head) and Mr Davies (Deputy Head Academic): a relaxed opportunity to spend time together and get to know one another better.  We are looking forward to sharing plenty of tea, cake and chatter with you all.

ABRSM Practical Music Exams: Monday 23 - Wednesday 25 March ~ APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN

We will be holding practical music examinations over two or three days during the period Monday 23 – Wednesday 25 March for candidates in both the Junior and Senior School. We need parental consent before we enter candidates, therefore parents need to complete the online form by 4pm on Monday 9 February at the latest. Regrettably, we will be unable to process late applications.
