Dear Parents & Carers
It was such a pleasure to welcome the girls back to school this morning and to see the Junior School once again full of energy, smiles and excitement. I hope you all enjoyed a restful and happy break.
Over the holidays, I found myself reflecting on the Spring Term and all that the girls experienced and achieved. It was an incredibly rich and vibrant term, characterised by creativity, enthusiasm and a genuine love of learning. The girls embraced every opportunity with curiosity and confidence, making the most of everything on offer both in and beyond the classroom.
Learning was brought to life through a fantastic range of trips, workshops and hands-on experiences. The Reception girls were captivated by The Rainbow Fish storytelling workshop, while Year 1 explored the natural environment on Hampstead Heath. Year 2 took part in an inspiring History of Flight workshop and Year 3 visited Lord’s Cricket Ground. Year 4 developed their skills during Swimming Week and explored the Barnet Environment Centre. Year 5 created beautiful pieces in their ceramics workshops and demonstrated teamwork and resilience on their PGL residential. Year 6 engaged thoughtfully with entrepreneur talks and sustainability through their upcycling projects.
Our year group assemblies were a joy and a true celebration of learning. From Year 4’s memorable Anglo-Saxon songs to Year 3’s immersive Egyptian adventure, Year 2’s engaging history of flight and Year 1’s exploration of belonging through Sunny the Meerkat, pupils spoke with confidence, pride and real enjoyment.
The performing arts flourished. The Drama Showcase was full of energy and talent, and the Year 6 production of Oliver! at the Arundel Centre was simply outstanding. The girls’ dedication and teamwork shone through, resulting in a polished, joyful and unforgettable performance.
Music continues to be a real strength across the school. From Young Voices to our Music Showcase and ABRSM examinations, pupils demonstrated commitment, confidence and impressive progress. It has been a pleasure to see their talents develop.
In Art, we were delighted that five pupils had their work selected for the Young Art exhibition at Christie’s, a fantastic achievement and a wonderful celebration of creativity. A special mention goes to Adah (Year 5), who has been selected for the third year in a row, an exceptional accomplishment.
Sport has been equally impressive, with both individual and team successes to celebrate. Rachel (Year 4) placed 3rd in the UCS Cross Country competition out of 46 runners, while Margot (Year 4) achieved 3rd place in gymnastics against The Cavendish. Emily (Year 6) has qualified for the Haringey London Mini Marathon team, a remarkable achievement given that only four places are available across the borough for her age group.
Team successes have been just as strong. Our Year 3 and 4 team placed 3rd overall in the London Youth Games qualifiers out of 24 schools, and our U11 Football Squad were plate winners at the Prep4Sport St George’s tournament. Our Netball Squad enjoyed an exceptional run in the U11 North London Netball League, finishing undefeated to win the league and scoring an impressive 58 goals. Across all events, the girls demonstrated teamwork, determination and resilience, representing the school with great pride and enthusiasm.
Wellbeing and personal development have remained central to all that we do. Children’s Mental Health Week, Safer Internet Day, NSPCC and social media workshops and our Maths and Science Weeks provided valuable opportunities for reflection, challenge and growth. World Book Day was another highlight, filled with creativity, joy and a shared love of reading. We were especially proud of Gabby M (Year 5), who was awarded First Prize in the national ISEB and IAPS Time to Write competition.
Our sense of community has continued to shine, with the House Captains leading successful charity initiatives, including bake sales for the Whittington Hospital Children’s Ward and food bank collections in support of the Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation.
As we look ahead, the Summer Term promises to be just as exciting and full of opportunity. We would also like to extend our warmest congratulations to Miss Marshall, who was married over the break, and wish her every happiness for the future.
We are looking forward to a rich programme of trips, workshops and outdoor learning, alongside sporting fixtures, Sports Day and many opportunities for the girls to develop their teamwork and resilience. There will be plentiful opportunities to perform through music and drama, alongside continued creativity across the curriculum.
We are particularly excited to see the girls continue to grow in independence, confidence and leadership, embodying our Channing Character values of curiosity, resilience, empathy and responsibility in all that they do. It is always a joy to see how much they flourish over the summer months.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. It is a privilege to work in partnership with you and to see the girls thrive in such a positive and inspiring environment. I very much look forward to all that this term will bring.
With warm wishes
Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School
