Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Wednesday 15 April 2026

Posted: 15th April 2026

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents & Carers

It was such a pleasure to welcome the girls back to school this morning and to see the Junior School once again full of energy, smiles and excitement. I hope you all enjoyed a restful and happy break.

Over the holidays, I found myself reflecting on the Spring Term and all that the girls experienced and achieved. It was an incredibly rich and vibrant term, characterised by creativity, enthusiasm and a genuine love of learning. The girls embraced every opportunity with curiosity and confidence, making the most of everything on offer both in and beyond the classroom.

Learning was brought to life through a fantastic range of trips, workshops and hands-on experiences. The Reception girls were captivated by The Rainbow Fish storytelling workshop, while Year 1 explored the natural environment on Hampstead Heath. Year 2 took part in an inspiring History of Flight workshop and Year 3 visited Lord’s Cricket Ground. Year 4 developed their skills during Swimming Week and explored the Barnet Environment Centre. Year 5 created beautiful pieces in their ceramics workshops and demonstrated teamwork and resilience on their PGL residential. Year 6 engaged thoughtfully with entrepreneur talks and sustainability through their upcycling projects.

Our year group assemblies were a joy and a true celebration of learning. From Year 4’s memorable Anglo-Saxon songs to Year 3’s immersive Egyptian adventure, Year 2’s engaging history of flight and Year 1’s exploration of belonging through Sunny the Meerkat, pupils spoke with confidence, pride and real enjoyment.

The performing arts flourished. The Drama Showcase was full of energy and talent, and the Year 6 production of Oliver! at the Arundel Centre was simply outstanding. The girls’ dedication and teamwork shone through, resulting in a polished, joyful and unforgettable performance.

Music continues to be a real strength across the school. From Young Voices to our Music Showcase and ABRSM examinations, pupils demonstrated commitment, confidence and impressive progress. It has been a pleasure to see their talents develop.

In Art, we were delighted that five pupils had their work selected for the Young Art exhibition at Christie’s, a fantastic achievement and a wonderful celebration of creativity. A special mention goes to Adah (Year 5), who has been selected for the third year in a row, an exceptional accomplishment.

Sport has been equally impressive, with both individual and team successes to celebrate. Rachel (Year 4) placed 3rd in the UCS Cross Country competition out of 46 runners, while Margot (Year 4) achieved 3rd place in gymnastics against The Cavendish. Emily (Year 6) has qualified for the Haringey London Mini Marathon team, a remarkable achievement given that only four places are available across the borough for her age group.

Team successes have been just as strong. Our Year 3 and 4 team placed 3rd overall in the London Youth Games qualifiers out of 24 schools, and our U11 Football Squad were plate winners at the Prep4Sport St George’s tournament. Our Netball Squad enjoyed an exceptional run in the U11 North London Netball League, finishing undefeated to win the league and scoring an impressive 58 goals. Across all events, the girls demonstrated teamwork, determination and resilience, representing the school with great pride and enthusiasm.

Wellbeing and personal development have remained central to all that we do. Children’s Mental Health Week, Safer Internet Day, NSPCC and social media workshops and our Maths and Science Weeks provided valuable opportunities for reflection, challenge and growth. World Book Day was another highlight, filled with creativity, joy and a shared love of reading. We were especially proud of Gabby M (Year 5), who was awarded First Prize in the national ISEB and IAPS Time to Write competition.

Our sense of community has continued to shine, with the House Captains leading successful charity initiatives, including bake sales for the Whittington Hospital Children’s Ward and food bank collections in support of the Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation.

As we look ahead, the Summer Term promises to be just as exciting and full of opportunity. We would also like to extend our warmest congratulations to Miss Marshall, who was married over the break, and wish her every happiness for the future.

We are looking forward to a rich programme of trips, workshops and outdoor learning, alongside sporting fixtures, Sports Day and many opportunities for the girls to develop their teamwork and resilience. There will be plentiful opportunities to perform through music and drama, alongside continued creativity across the curriculum.

We are particularly excited to see the girls continue to grow in independence, confidence and leadership, embodying our Channing Character values of curiosity, resilience, empathy and responsibility in all that they do. It is always a joy to see how much they flourish over the summer months.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. It is a privilege to work in partnership with you and to see the girls thrive in such a positive and inspiring environment. I very much look forward to all that this term will bring.

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

However, they will endeavour to answer your queries within 24 hours. Please do not think that a lack of instant response means a lack of interest on the part of the member of staff.

If you have an emergency which needs to be dealt with before school next opens, please email: jsoffice@channing.co.uk. Calendar & Events

Absences & Religious Holidays Form

As per our Attendance Policy parents are requested to give advance notice to the school if they intend their daughter to be absent. Please write to Miss Hamalis (Head of the Junior School) via JSOffice@channing.co.uk with your request.

We hope you can appreciate that in line with government guidance, we are not able to authorise absence for holidays or absence related to holiday during term time. If you do decide to take your daughter out of school, this will need to be recorded as an unauthorised absence. Further details can be found in our Attendance Policy linked above.

Please complete this form outlining the days your daughter will be absent from school due to religious observance.

Form Photos: Friday 17 April

We will be welcoming back NiceSmile to take Form Photos on Friday 17 April. Please ensure that your daughter comes into school in her Summer uniform, including a cardigan/jumper, plain white, long or short socks or white tights, school shoes and with a hairbrush in her bag.

No jewellery may be worn except for religious symbols or small plain studs in pierced ears and the girls should not be wearing nail varnish.

Parent-Led RE Talks

As part of our ongoing commitment to enrich the Religious Education curriculum, we would like to invite you to share your knowledge, experiences and insights with our pupils.

If you have a specific festival or celebration that you feel connected to, you may wish to speak to your daughter’s year group about it. Any potential talk would involve sharing the history and significance of a religious festival, how it is traditionally celebrated and perhaps any personal or family traditions you observe. You might also wish to talk about the importance of this celebration within your community or culture. You are very welcome to bring along items, photographs or other materials to help bring the event to life for our pupils.

If you would be interested in doing this, please complete this Google Form. This form must be completed in advance and is for the Summer Term only.

Once we receive your response, we will be in touch to see how your talk could complement what pupils are currently learning in their Religious Education lessons. Please note that talks cannot be arranged by emailing your daughter’s Form Teacher. Requests submitted outside of the given window may not be considered due to the busy nature of the school calendar and existing commitments.

We kindly request that all talks and visits to the school refrain from being food-related. This is due to the wide range of allergies and dietary requirements within our school community. Additionally, when completing the Google Form, please include the number of adults who will be involved in delivering the talk. Unfortunately, we will not be able to change this once the form has been submitted. Providing this information in advance will help us make the necessary arrangements and ensure everything runs smoothly.

If you have any questions, please contact our RE Lead, Miss Parmar: dparmar@channing.co.uk.

Founders’ Friday Open Classroom & Tea Party: Friday 26 June 3.00-4.00pm

We are delighted to invite all parents to our Open Classroom Event on Friday 26 June from 3.00 – 4.00pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity to visit your daughter’s classroom, as well as our specialist classrooms and explore the work she has produced in her books and share the learning she has enjoyed this year.

This is an informal, celebratory event where you will be able to browse books and projects, with your daughter guiding you through her learning and sharing what she has achieved across the year. It’s a fantastic chance to engage with her education and see firsthand how she has grown academically. In addition to classroom learning, specialist teachers will also be sharing highlights of learning in their rooms/spaces, and in the library, giving you a broader insight into the curriculum and co-curriculum.

Please note that all of the girls must be collected at their allocated dismissal time between 2.00 – 2.30pm, as no after-school clubs or Late Owls provision will be running on this day, to ensure the staff at school have adequate time to prepare the classrooms. We kindly ask that you collect your daughter at her dismissal time and then return to school for the event between 3.00 – 4.00pm. If you have time between dismissal and the start of the event, we recommend enjoying a visit to Waterlow Park or the surrounding local area.

Dismissal Times:

2:00pm: Reception (side gate)
2:10pm: Year 1 (main gate)
2:10pm: Year 2 (side gate)
2.20pm: Year 3 (main gate)
2.20pm: Year 4 (side gate)
2.30pm: Year 5 (main gate)
2.30pm: Year 6 (side gate)

Alongside the Open Classroom, Miss Hamalis will be hosting a Parents’ Tea Party with Mrs Brant (Deputy Head), Mr Davies (Deputy Head Academic), Miss Jackson (SENCo), Miss Kilanko (Learning Support Teacher), Ms Francis (Alumnae Engagement & Archive Manager) and Mrs Mitchell (Development Manager) in Fairseat Hall. This will be a relaxed opportunity to spend time together, meet other parents and enjoy tea, cake and conversation.

We very much look forward to welcoming you.

Extra-Curricular Clubs

Summer Term Club Programme

Our Summer Term Club Programme begins on Monday 20 April, and will run until Friday 26 June (morning and lunchtime only).

It is essential that you log onto SOCS again to check the day, time and cost (where applicable) of your daughter’s allocated club(s). If a club does not appear on the list, it means that your daughter has been added to the waiting list due to it being oversubscribed.

If your daughter has been allocated a place in an external club but does not attend, you will still be charged for the sessions. To avoid unnecessary charges, it is essential that you review her allocations ahead of the programme starting on Monday.

If your daughter is no longer able to attend any of her allocated clubs or you are looking for additional clubs for your daughter to attend, please contact Miss Radford at jsreceptionist@channing.co.uk

Please note that if your daughter misses three club sessions (excluding residential trips or other school-related events), her place in the club will be withdrawn and offered to another pupil on the waiting list. Regular attendance is an important part of the club programme, and we encourage all pupils to show commitment to their chosen club(s).
