Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 19 January 2026

Posted: 19th January 2026

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents & Carers

It was an absolute joy to watch the Drama Showcase in assembly today. Huge thanks go to our Drama Teacher, Mrs Lynch, for organising such a vibrant and uplifting celebration of the girls’ work from the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Lights, Camera, Act! clubs. The confidence, expression and sheer enjoyment on display were a delight, and the seamless blend of poetry and musical theatre was truly wonderful. It was a genuine pleasure to see the girls perform with such energy, pride and enthusiasm.

What made the showcase particularly special was the richness of learning it offered not only to those performing, but also to those watching. For the girls on stage, it was a valuable opportunity to develop confidence, teamwork and expressive skills, as well as the courage to perform in front of an audience. For the audience, it was a chance to listen attentively, appreciate the creativity of others and engage with language, rhythm and meaning in a lively and memorable way. Assemblies like this help the girls learn how to be both confident performers and thoughtful, respectful listeners.

We were especially struck by the creative way poetry was explored and brought to life. Approaching poetry through drama, movement and voice allows girls to engage with language in a deeply meaningful way. It builds confidence, nurtures imagination and empathy, and develops strong oracy skills. Most importantly, it helps poetry to feel joyful and accessible, encouraging a lasting love of language rather than a fear of getting it “right”.

Watching the showcase prompted a personal reflection for me. When I was in Year 5, learning poetry often meant memorising verses by heart and standing up to recite them on the spot. While I love poetry now, that approach took much of the joy out of it at the time and left me feeling more nervous than inspired. Today’s performance was a powerful reminder of how creative, supportive approaches can make all the difference, helping every child to feel confident, included and excited about learning.

Thank you to Mrs Lynch and to all the girls for such a wonderful start to the day. It was a lovely example of girls enjoying success.

Before we sent off this year’s Young Art entries to the judging panel, we were delighted to display them in the library. Much like the Drama Showcase, the exhibition was a joyful celebration of the girls’ confidence, creativity and individuality. It was a pleasure to see such a wide range of technical skill, imagination and thoughtful expression on display, and to watch the girls take genuine pride in sharing their work with others. Our sincere thanks go to Mr Fellows, Art and DT Teacher, and Miss Sarkar, Art and DT TA, whose expertise and encouragement supported the girls in producing work of such a high standard. If you missed the opportunity to view the artwork in person, you can still enjoy it by clicking this link: Young Art exhibition at Channing

As Burns Night approaches, we send our warmest wishes to all those in our community who will be celebrating. We hope you enjoy marking the occasion with good cheer, poetry and tradition.

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

Information

Please find the email contact details of the staff: JS Key Contact information. Please could we ask that your specific query is directed to the appropriate individual and anything of a more serious nature is directed to a member of the Senior Team. Please note that Miss Hamalis needs to approve all requests for absences so please send them via the Junior School Office: jsoffice@channing.co.uk

In order to prevent unnecessary awkwardness and/or embarrassment, please remember to address members of staff by their title and surname.

Please be mindful that staff may not pick up emails immediately (teachers will, of course, not be checking emails when they are teaching, running clubs or supervising pupils at break and lunchtimes) and may choose to take time to investigate the matter before responding. However, they will endeavour to answer your queries within 24 hours. Please do not think that a lack of instant response means a lack of interest on the part of the member of staff.

Please note that staff are not expected to reply to emails outside normal school hours, weekends or during school holidays. If you have an emergency which needs to be dealt with before school next opens, please email: jsoffice@channing.co.uk. Please do not send communications or information to communication@channing.co.uk or info@channing.co.uk.

You can find the Channing Promise on the school website. This is something the whole school community upholds and underlines our values of respect, tolerance and inclusivity. We know you will be nothing short of respectful in your communications with staff and you can expect the same in return.

Attendance

Absences & Religious Holidays Form

As per our Attendance Policy parents are requested to give advance notice to the school if they intend their daughter to be absent. Please write to Miss Hamalis (Head of the Junior School) via JSOffice@channing.co.uk with your request.

Please complete this form outlining the days your daughter will be absent from school due to religious observance.

Y5&6: Self Dismissal

Important Information

Due to safeguarding concerns and the welfare of the girls, pupils in Year 5 and 6 will no longer be permitted to self-dismiss to the courtyard after a club. Please ensure that if your daughter does have permission to self-dismiss after her club, that she has a clear routine in place to ensure she remains safe after self-dismissing.

If you are unable to pick up your daughter promptly at her collection time and you do not permit her to self-dismiss, you can sign her up to Late Owls via the Let’s Leap website. Let’s Leap offer several options including early pick-up times and sessions which begin after a pupil’s club too.

If your daughter self-dismisses to the courtyard straight after school, please note that this area is not supervised and has regular movement through the external gate. It is intended only for very short periods, for example if a parent is briefly delayed at the 3:40pm dismissal. Extended waiting in the courtyard is not suitable or safe, particularly in wet or dark weather conditions, and alternative arrangements should be made to ensure prompt collection.

Maths Week: Monday 2 February - Friday 6 February

From Monday 2 February – Friday 6 February, we will be celebrating Maths Week; this years theme is ‘Money’. On Friday the girls will celebrate and share their projects as part of NSPCC Number Day.

On Friday 6 February, we are pairing up with the NSPCC for their Number Day. The girls and staff are encouraged to take part in Dress up for Digits, while raising money to support NSPCC services such as the Speak Out Stay Safe programme. If your daughter is unable to bring the suggested £2 donation to school on Friday, please donate online using the link below: Number Day

The girls are invited to come into school dressed as a number; this could be anything from wearing a football shirt with a number on to dressing up as a dice. To help the school in its aim to become more sustainable, we encourage the girls to make an outfit using items they already have. We look forward to seeing their creativity!

The collection starts on Monday 26 January (next week) and will run until Friday 6 February. If your daughter is in Sharpe House, please ask her to place donations in one of the blue, labelled Food Bank collection bins in the courtyard. Although the donations will mainly be from Sharpe, all members of the community are, of course, very welcome to donate.

Lunch Menus

The girls (and staff) are very lucky to have a delicious and nutritious lunch every day. Please spend some time looking at the menu options for this term with your daughter on our website.

Birthday Cakes & Treats

You are very welcome to send in nut-free cakes or treats for your daughter to celebrate her birthday with her form or year group. Please ensure that they are separate cakes or treats rather than a large cake that needs to be sliced. Additionally, please be mindful of the size of cakes; they should be no bigger than a child’s hand. Due to health and safety, please do not send in cake pops, lollipops or any other hard sweets. Furthermore, please do not send in treats for any other occasions without prior permission from your daughter’s Form/CoForm Teacher.

Polite Reminder: No Dogs allowed on the school grounds

Information

For the safety and comfort of everyone, please remember that dogs are not permitted on the school grounds. We have several pupils and staff with allergies, and some people are understandably nervous around dogs. In addition, we’ve had to clear up dog mess, which we’d very much like to avoid in future. Thank you for helping us keep our school grounds safe, clean and welcoming for all.
