Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 26 January 2026

Posted: 26th January 2026

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents & Carers

This morning, it was an absolute delight to watch our Year 4 pupils bring history so vividly and joyfully to life through their assembly: Anglo-Saxons’ Got Talent. The energy, confidence and sheer enthusiasm in the room were infectious. Through storytelling, music and performance, the girls transported us back in time, celebrating figures such as Alfred the Great, Æthelflæd of Mercia, Beowulf and Boudicca with real understanding, humour and pride. It was a wonderful reminder of just how powerful learning can be when children – and adults – are fully immersed in it.

History plays a vital and much-loved role in our curriculum from Reception through to Year 6 and beyond. For our youngest girls, it begins with stories – learning about themselves, their families and events beyond their own lived experience. As they grow, pupils develop a strong sense of chronology, an understanding of cause and consequence, and the ability to think critically about how the past has shaped the world they live in today. History encourages curiosity (a nod to Curiosity Fox), thoughtful questioning and empathy (a nod to Empathy Rabbit), helping the girls to understand that there are often many perspectives behind a single event.

This feels particularly poignant as tomorrow is Holocaust Memorial Day. Teaching history is not only about celebrating achievements and heroism; it is also about remembering, reflecting and learning from the past so that we can build a more compassionate and just future. Even with our youngest girls, we carefully lay the foundations for understanding fairness, responsibility and moral courage, helping the girls to appreciate why remembering matters.

History also provides our girls with powerful role models. Through studying leaders, changemakers and everyday people from different periods and cultures, they learn that courage, resilience, wisdom and compassion are timeless qualities. Seeing figures such as Queen Æthelflæd and Boudicca portrayed with such strength and confidence this morning reinforced a crucial message: girls have always shaped history and always will.

On a personal note, when I was a form teacher earlier in my career, my favourite subjects to teach were English, art and history. I loved the way these subjects allowed pupils to be creative, to express themselves and to make meaningful connections with the world around them. Watching the Year 4 assembly this morning reminded me exactly why; history has a unique power to inspire imagination, spark curiosity and ignite a lifelong love of learning.

The Year 4 assembly truly exemplified what we value most in our approach to teaching and learning: deep knowledge combined with creativity, confidence and joy. The girls did not simply recite facts; they understood them, interpreted them and shared them with pride. These are the foundations of excellent learning and of confident, articulate young people.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of the curriculum and for encouraging curiosity and conversation at home. Moments like this morning remind us just how special our school community is and how our girls continue to enjoy success across the full spectrum of subjects on offer.

As a final reminder, the parent survey closes today. Thank you to everyone who has already taken the time to complete it. If you have not yet done so, please click on the link here to share your views. As the survey is conducted only once every three years, your feedback is incredibly valuable in helping to shape our school.

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

Sharpe Food Bank Collection: Monday 26 January - Friday 6 February

Between Monday 26 January and Friday 6 February, we are asking the girls in Sharpe House to donate items to the Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation’s (AWTF) food bank. The AWTF aims to support families in need with emergency food parcels, and provides hot meals and fresh fruit and vegetables to over 200 hundred homeless people in the local area.

The collection starts on Monday 26 January (next week) and will run until Friday 6 February. If your daughter is in Sharpe House, please ask her to place donations in one of the blue, labelled Food Bank collection bins in the courtyard. Although the donations will mainly be from Sharpe, all members of the community are, of course, very welcome to donate.

Please ensure all items are long-life produce, as regrettably, fresh items cannot be donated and that all donated items are within their sell by and use by date.

Many thanks in advance to Sharpe House for all your support!

Children’s Mental Health Week: w/b Monday 9 February including Dress to Express Non-Uniform Day on Friday 13 February

We are delighted to mark our annual celebration of Children’s Mental Health Week, with this year’s theme, ‘This Is My Place.’ The theme focuses on helping children understand the importance of feeling safe, valued and connected, whether at school, at home or within their wider community. It encourages the girls to reflect on where they feel they belong and how positive relationships and supportive environments contribute to wellbeing.

Throughout the week, the girls will take part in a range of activities designed to promote mental health and wellbeing, while fostering a strong sense of belonging. If you would like to join in with some of these activities at home with your daughter, please follow the link provided.

We will conclude the week with a special non-uniform day on Friday 13 February, themed ‘Dress to Express’. This is a wonderful opportunity for the girls to celebrate their individuality by wearing their favourite colour(s), outfit or a creative combination that reflects who they are. In keeping with our commitment to sustainability, we encourage the girls to use items they already have at home, allowing creativity to shine without the need for new purchases. We look forward to seeing the unique expressions the girls bring to the day!

Open Classroom & Parents’ Tea Party: Save the Date ~ Tuesday 24 March, 4-5pm

We are excited to invite all parents to our Open Classroom Event on Tuesday 24 March, from 4-5pm. This event offers parents the opportunity to visit their daughter’s classroom and explore the work that she has produced in her books.

This is a fantastic chance to engage with your daughter’s education and see firsthand how she has grown academically.

Additionally on this date, Miss Hamalis will be hosting a Parents’ Tea Party with Mrs Brant (Deputy Head) and Mr Davies (Deputy Head Academic): a relaxed opportunity to spend time together and get to know one another better.  We are looking forward to sharing plenty of tea, cake and chatter with you all.

Information

Thank you very much for your continued support in helping us keep our pupils – and staff – safe and our dismissal routines running smoothly.

For safeguarding reasons, we kindly ask that parents and carers do not re-enter the school building once their daughter has been dismissed. We are sure you will appreciate that the entrance area outside the school office is not a designated waiting space. If there is a queue for the toilets, we would be grateful if you could please wait outside until they become available.

Where possible, we aim to provide gazebos during adverse weather. However, there may be occasions when these are needed elsewhere on the school site, so we kindly ask that families dress appropriately for the weather while waiting in the courtyard.

We would be very grateful if you could also pass this message on to any other adults who collect the girls at the end of the day. Thank you, as always, for your understanding and cooperation – it is very much appreciated.
