Dear Parents and Carers
As we approach the end of term, it has been a joy to reflect on the breadth and depth of musical and dramatic talent across the Junior School. Last week, we were treated to a beautiful flute performance by pupils who learn with Ms Bircher (VMS). Whilst this morning, the Key Stage 1 and the Years 3&4 Light Camera Act Club girls took to the stage in a vibrant and lively Drama Showcase directed by Mrs Lynch (Drama Lead). Both events were an absolute delight, not only for the quality of performance but for the sheer confidence, joy and presence shown by each girl. Their enthusiasm was infectious and their achievements truly uplifting.
These moments serve as powerful reminders of why Music and Drama are such vital parts of our curriculum. Through the performing arts, we nurture creativity, build self-belief and cultivate collaboration – all essential skills for life and all beautifully exemplified in the girls’ performances.
Our Music curriculum is rich, inclusive and varied. Whether learning to sing, compose using music technology, explore percussion or study musical styles from different cultures and time periods, the girls embark on a musical journey that is both exciting and expansive. Their classroom experiences are underpinned by a strong sense of exploration and expression.
Beyond the classroom, our extracurricular music programme is both dynamic and diverse. From the KS1 Choir and PBuzz Club to advanced ensembles such as the Spears String Orchestra, Folk Band and Mariachi Band, there is something for everyone. Over 130 individual music lessons take place each week across 15 different instruments – an extraordinary number and a testament to the enthusiasm of our pupils and the skill of our Visiting Music Staff (VMS). If your daughter is interested in learning a musical instrument, now is the perfect time to explore the possibilities. See information below under the subheading Music Lessons for 2025/26.
Performance is at the heart of all we do, and we make sure every girl has the chance to share her progress and shine. From informal concerts and Year Group Assemblies to large-scale productions in the Arundel Centre (our purpose built theatre across the road), the girls from Reception to Year 6 are regularly celebrated as performers. This year, highlights have included the Reception Winter Production, the Year 6 musical Mary Poppins, the KS2 Music Showcase and all of the Year Group assemblies – all delivered with enthusiasm and pride.
These opportunities do far more than showcase talent: they foster confidence, bring the girls together in meaningful collaboration and create lasting memories. I am very much looking forward to the upcoming Year 2 performance of The Wizard of Oz, the Year 1 String Group Assembly and the Year 6 Leavers’ Assembly where I know the girls will once again rise to the occasion.
With many thanks to Mrs Lynch (Drama Lead) and Mrs Munro (Head of Music) for the countless opportunities they provide for the girls to learn, perform and thrive through the performing arts.
Thank you, as ever, for your support in encouraging the girls to take part in these rich and rewarding experiences. We look forward to celebrating even more of their achievements in the final weeks of term and into the next academic year.
With warm wishes
Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School
