Dear Parents & Carers
This week, we are marking Sustainability Week: a wonderful opportunity for the girls to explore how small, everyday actions can make a big difference to the world around us. Teaching the girls about sustainability is not just about caring for the environment; it is about nurturing responsibility, respect and curiosity – qualities that help them grow into thoughtful, compassionate global citizens.
In today’s assembly, the girls heard some uplifting environmental good-news stories from across the world. They discovered that in 2024, renewable energy became the most widely used energy source globally, and learnt about animals such as the Asian short-clawed otter being rediscovered in Nepal after more than 180 years. They also found out about new inventions, including a special sponge that can remove 99.9% of microplastics from the ocean! These stories remind the girls that positive change is happening, and that they, too, can be part of that progress.
We want every girl to feel empowered to play her part. Whether it’s turning off lights when they leave a room, avoiding waste, recycling, reusing or choosing to walk or scoot to school, each action contributes to a healthier, more sustainable planet. By encouraging the girls to think about the impact of their choices, we hope they will see that caring for the environment begins with them.
Sustainability also links beautifully to so many of our Channing Characters. Responsibility Badger encourages us to take care of our surroundings. Respectfulness Hedgehog and Empathy Rabbit remind us to treat others – and the natural world – with kindness. Curiosity Fox inspires the girls to ask questions and explore innovative solutions. And Perseverance Squirrel helps them understand that meaningful environmental change often requires time, patience and determination.
Throughout the week, we are encouraging all pupils to travel sustainably to school – whether by walking, scooting, cycling, taking public transport or car sharing. Even doing this once makes a difference and helps the girls see that collective action creates real impact. Each morning, our Sustainability Officers, along with Mr Rich and Miss Baker (Forest School and Sustainability Leads), will be in the courtyard celebrating these efforts and handing out Responsibility Badger stickers to those who travel sustainably.
We hope Sustainability Week sparks conversations at home about what it means to live responsibly – from how we travel to how we shop, eat, reduce waste and recycle. We reinforce to the girls that living sustainably is not about being perfect; it is about making small, consistent choices that protect our planet for the future.
Together, let’s continue inspiring our girls to be brave (making Bravery Mole proud), kind and proactive in looking after our world – today, tomorrow and for generations to come.
With warm wishes
Miss Dina Hamalis
